PHOENIX – Two men are dead after a murder-suicide that police believe started with a fight over a woman.

Police were called to the Highland Gardens apartment complex just off of 15th Street south of Camelback Road shortly after 5:30 a.m.

One of the men involved, identified as 18-year-old Michael Wates-Connor, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person, 19-year-old Matthew Mersch, was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Neighbors told 3TV they heard somebody running through the apartment complex shortly after 5 a.m. The family said they heard gunfire just moments later.

When a member of that family went outside to investigate, he spotted Connor laying face-down in the back parking lot. He said that man appeared to be dead.

While police were scouring the scene for evidence, they were not actively searching for a suspect.

Police say they believe both men were at a party in north Phoenix. After the party they were given a ride to their apartment by a juvenile female friend.

The two men reportedly got into an argument in the parking lot shortly after being dropped off which led to the shooting. Police believe Connor shot and killed Mersch, his childhood friend, before turning the gun on himself.

Both men went to school together, played baseball and were roommates. It is unclear what led up to the shooting.
