Phoenix man recovering after 3-day forest ordealPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Authorities say a Phoenix man is recovering after getting lost and spending three days in the Tonto National Forest.
They say 62-year-old Gary Smith was found in severely dehydrated condition Tuesday.
He remained in stable condition Wednesday in the intensive care unit of John C. Lincoln North Hospital and doctors say he's expected to recover.
Authorities say Smith was delivering flowers in the Cave Creek area north of Phoenix on Saturday morning when he got lost on a dirt road.
Smith later sent a phone text message to a friend but mistyped his location.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office crews couldn't locate Smith, but a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office helicopter crew spotted Smith's vehicle about 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Smith was found resting underneath an umbrella about 2 miles from his vehicle.
