PHOENIX – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is offering a new Spanish-language version of the pink boxers he sells to the public.

The boxers are normally imprinted with "Go Joe" and the sheriff's office star. Now, they are also available with "Vamos Jose" on them.

Arpaio began issuing pink underwear nearly 17 years ago after learning inmates were stealing their jailhouse whites. Arpaio told staff members to dye the underwear pink to better track inventory.

After explaining his idea on television, the sheriff's office received requests for the pink boxers from people on the outside who wanted to wear them, according to a news release.

The sheriff's office said the sale of the pink boxers benefits at-risk youth programs and helps the sheriff's all-volunteer posse.

The new boxers will "raise eyebrows as well as sales," the news release said.

"I'm just giving the Hispanic community the chance of buying this underwear with Spanish on it," Arpaio said.

Arpaio kicked off sales at Valle Luna restaurant Monday morning.
