Arizona eyes more private prison contractsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A company that operates an Arizona prison where three violent offenders escaped last year is among four firms that the Arizona Department of Corrections is proposing be awarded new prison bed contracts.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. operates the state prison in Kingman which state officials have said was plagued with security flaws. Two of the inmates are charged in a double homicide in New Mexico.
The state received proposals from five companies and is recommending contracts be awarded to four of them. It's now preparing notices to send to legislators and local officials in advance of contract awards in September.
According to information released by the state, the new prison beds could be built at sits in Eloy, Yuma, Perryville, Winslow and Coolidge.
