Tucson drive-by leaves father with questions

TUCSON, Ariz. -- An early morning drive-by shooting this week on the Northwest side, has the Pima County Sheriff's Department still looking for the gunmen.

And it has a father looking for answers.

A man who's dedicated his life to combating violence, only to see his son now confined to the hospital.

Around 2 A.M. PCSD deputies were called to a shooting at Ina and Mona Lisa.

As a result of the shooting the victim's car crashed into a pole.  There were three victims, two women and a man, Danny Mendez.

"One of the detectives came down and explained to me what had happened so I just wanted to find out if he was alive or dead," said Danny's father Pastor Julian Mendez.

Mendez's father is Pastor Julian Mendez of Goodfellas Ministries. A ministry that spends a lot of time trying to put an end to violence. After hearing that his son was seriously wounded, a victim of violence, it put things into perspective.

"Sometimes I reach out to so many people and help out so many people that are involved in violence, I guess when it hits home you don't know how to react," said Pastor Mendez.

Danny's father says his gun shot wound to the head is similar to the one Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords suffered on January 8.  Mendez says, his son's not only survived but his condition is improving.

"Even the doctors say, 'We have never seen this.'  Already yesterday he was responding," said Mendez.  "They took all the tubes out, they want him to talk to us.  Things are looking very well."

Wednesday afternoon, PCSD released new information on the case. Detectives found a gun close by to where the car crashed into a pole.

"They do believe that handgun was inside the victims car at the time of the shooting, but it is still unclear whether there was return fire from that handgun," said Deputy Dawn Barkman from the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Pastor Mendez says from what he knows his son wasn't a target and the shooting might have resulted from a disagreement at a party or nightclub.

"Like I said that I know of no I don't like I said he's 34-years old he lives his own life we have a real good relationship, he never told me that his life was in danger or anything like that," said Mendez.

The gunmen were driving a dark colored SUV similar to a Range Rover or Land Rover.

If you have any information on the case, you're urged to call 88-CRIME.
