Phoenix men survive plane crash in NogalesPosted: Updated:
NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - A small private plane has crashed during an attempted takeoff from the Nogales International Airport, but the two men on board were not seriously hurt.
Pilot John Janicke of Phoenix tells the Nogales International that the single-engine Cessna 206 veered to the left when he advanced the throttle. The airplane became airborne and apparently snagged the top of a chain link fence bordering the runway. It
struck the ground and went over an embankment before coming to rest.
Janicke and passenger Kenneth Kelsey of Scottsdale landed at Nogales Tuesday morning for a U.S. Customs inspection while returning from a fishing trip to Mexico.
Airport Manager Larry Tiffin says the plane would probably have gone another 75 feet down into a canyon if a tree had not stopped its progress.
