John Malkovich, Patrick Dempsey are new faces in 'Transformers' franchise

PHOENIX – If you’ve already seen “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” then you already know there were some casting change-ups, including the addition of two people you probably never expected to see – John Malkovich and Patrick Dempsey.

Many people didn’t realize Malkovich, who usually specializes in art films, was in the movie. He’s nowhere to be seen in the trailer.

The actor recently learned the benefit of being in big-budget films, but a good script is essential. Last year, he took a role in “Red,” this year it was “Transformers.”

As long as the script is good, he said, the work is pretty much the same.

“You still just show up, hopefully on time and prepared, and you try to convince people you’re someone you’re not somewhere you’re not doing something you’re not,” he explained. “That’s the same in anything if the budget is $2 or $200 million. It’s not different.”

Dempsey, aka “McDreamy” on the hit TV show “Grey’s Anatomy,” is also a new face to the franchise. It was a very different role for Dempsey. (Spoiler alert!) This is the first time he’s ever played the bad guy.

“It’s fun to do something different … to have someone who believes in you enough to let you go and try that,” he said.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is in theaters now. It’s rated PG-13.
