Try It Before You Buy It Grocery Edition

Posted: Updated:

When did a loaf of bread get to be $4?!

The price of groceries has really snuck up on me these days.  I’m spending more and getting less, but I still love trying new things.  And, it seems I’m not alone.  As I researched this segment, I found some interesting stats.  I learned that 7 in 10 shoppers like trying new products and 8 in 10 consumers would encourage a friend or family member to purchase a product they like.  Conversely, 6 in 10 are likely to purchase a product if it is recommended to them by friends or family.

Lately, I’ve been taking extra time when grocery shopping because I’ve been helping my hubby lose some weight.  We’re eating at home all the time and so I’ve been paying extra attention to anything new at the grocery.  So I decided to try some of the newer items in the store and let you all know what I think.  Of course, taste is a personal matter, but these days, I definitely pause before I plop down my $4 – $5 on something I’m just not sure about.

So here are the items I liked and as a friend  would recommend:

Mio Water Enhancer
Bertoli Frozen Meals
Ore Ida Steam and Mash Sweet Potatoes
Betty Crocker Cookie Icing
Betty Crocker Cupcake Frosting
Fiber One 90 Calorie Bars
Graduates Yogurt Melts
Emerald Glazed Pecans
Pillsbury Simply Refrigerated dough
Chobani Greek Yogurt
Kirkland Crumbled Bacon
Talenti Sea Salt Caramel Gelato
Flat Out Flatbread
Oroweat Healthful Bread
Oroweat Sandwich Thins
Thomas Bagel Thins

And, these, my friend, I’d leave it to you to decide:

Newton’s Fruit Thins
Pillsbury Easy Frost (because I liked Betty Crocker’s better)
Tortilla Stuffers (except to add into a breakfast burrito)

I was thrilled that so many of the new products actually held up to their hype.  And, we’re loving the new “thin” bread products as we’re trying to control portions and calories.

So, pick up a new product of two every once in a while – especially if it comes recommended from a friend.
