PIR paving project under wayPosted: Updated:
AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Phoenix International Raceway is undergoing its first major track paving project in 20 years.
Bruce Haffner gave us an aerial view of the stripped track from the Fort McDowell Casino Newschopper.
The one-mile oval also is undergoing slight configuration changes officials hope will increase speeds at the track 2 mph to 3 mph and promote more side-by-side racing.
The changes will include a widening of the front stretch, installation of concrete pit stalls and implementation of variable banking so there'll be immediate use of two racing grooves.
Construction began after the Feb. 27 NASCAR race and is expected to conclude in September. PIR's second NASCAR race is Nov. 13.
