MESA, Ariz. – Mesa police officers caught two suspected copper thieves early Saturday morning.

Steven John Grob, 29, and William Jason Brewer, 27, were arrested and booked for aggravated criminal damage and other misdemeanor charges during an investigation of copper wire thefts in Mesa.

An officer patrolling near Hawes and Quarterline roads at approximately 1:30 a.m. saw the two men standing with bicycles near a series of street lights that were out, according to Sgt. Ed Wessing.

Grob ran from the scene and Brewer was detained next to a damaged street light pole.

Several wires in the pole were cut. One wire was pulled out and stretched approximately 50 to 60 feet on the sidewalk.

K-9 assisted with a search and located Grob hiding on a nearby golf course. Wessing said Grob had a backpack full of burglary tools and a pair of gloves was found on the ground nearby.
