AVONDALE, Ariz. – Police are investigating an early morning burglary that ended in a shooting Monday.

According to Reuben Gonzales of the Avondale Police Department, a 911 call regarding a burglary in progress came in shortly before 4 a.m. The homeowner said there was a burglar in his house. That homeowner also advised the 911 operator that he was armed with a handgun.

By the time officers arrived on the scene in the area of 115th Avenue and Tonto Street (just northwest of Buckeye Road/Maricopa 85), the would-be burglar was already gone.

The homeowner, weapon in hand, had confronted the suspect. The two then got into a struggle, during which the homeowner fired at the suspect.

Gonzales said the suspect broke a window and escaped. Officers said there was no evidence indicating that the suspect was wounded.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered minor injuries to his arms. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He has been released and is back home. Investigators were working with him to try and identify the suspect.

Police have not said how the suspect got into the house nor have they released a description of the man. All investigators have said so far is that the suspect is a white male.
