Taxi driver accused in hit and run in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. - A taxi driver has been arrested following a hit-and-run incident in Phoenix.

It happened Sunday at about 3 p.m. at a convenience store near the intersection of 15th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Police say the clerk at the convenience store called 911 after a taxi driver, identified as 41-year-old Joseph Goldmeer, allegedly ran over a 45-year-old pedestrian and fled the scene.

When officers arrived at the scene they found the victim, Terry S. Kotila, on the south end of the parking lot. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Steve Martos with Phoenix police says there was a verbal altercation between the victim and the taxi driver prior to the incident. Witnesses say the altercation continued in the parking lot and the taxi driver got inside the vehilce and accelerated, running over the victim as he walked through the parking lot.

Based on witness accounts, police believe this was an intentional assault. Goldmeer was located shortly after 6 p.m. in Gilbert. He was arrested without incident.

Police are also investigating what led up to the incident.

Kotila is listed in extremely critical condition.
