Fake grenade delauys flight headed to CharlottePosted: Updated:
NEWPORT NEWS -- A suspicious device found in a suitcase delayed a flight headed to Charlotte from an airport in Virginia for about an hour.
TSA security spotted something suspicious during routine screening around 12:15 p.m. at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, said airport spokeswoman Jessica Wharton.
The ticket counter and passengers were evacuated as a precaution.
An exchange soldier from Peru who had been at Fort Eustis had the item in his luggage. "He had an interpreter with him because he didn't speak English," Wharton added.
Three flights headed to Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia and Atlanta were briefly held, but they were cleared to leave around 1:05 p.m.
