U of A optical science department wins big mirror contractPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- University of Arizona optical scientists are set to polish the centerpiece of what will be the world's largest solar telescope.
The college of optical sciences won a multi-million dollar contract to polish the 14-foot primary mirror for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope.
The ATST, being built on a mountaintop on the Hawaiian island of Maui, will create high resolution images of the fine scale structures of the sun.
The U of A's international reputation for building massive mirrors helped it land the contract.
No word on the dollar amount.
