Officials say 18 structures lost near Sierra Vista

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities said Monday that four businesses and 14 homes were destroyed when winds pushed a fire south of Sierra Vista into neighborhoods.

That brings the total amount of homes destroyed by the Monument fire to 62.

Winds gusts of 50 mph pushed the fire down a mountain and across Highway 92 on Sunday afternoon, forcing 1,700 homes to be evacuated.

Cochise County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas says the sheriff's office is notifying the property owners.

Forty-eight homes had been lost before Sunday.

The fire has now burned 42 square miles or nearly 27,000 acres since it broke out on June 12 and is 27 percent contained.

Much lighter winds on Monday allowed air tankers to again attack the flames.
