3 Apartments destroyed in Phoenix blaze

PHOENIX - Firefighters say at least three apartments are a total loss after a fire ripped through a housing complex at 5th Avenue and Highland Friday evening.

It's still unclear what caused the blaze at 512 W Highland Avenue, but several neighbors say that at around 6:30 p.m. they heard a loud pop and looked outside to see flames tearing through several apartments.

"I looked out my window and the fire was blazing through the roof," said Alexia Cathers, who lives next door to the complex. "I went out, grabbed my hose to try to start dousing the fire, but it's too late, it was gone."

No one was injured but neighbors were visibly shaken while watching the building go up in flames.

"I was watching the news about the fires up north and thinking, 'God can we get some rain for these people' and next thing I know she's yelling at me to get the hell out of my house so we're safe," said Pamela Talamantes, whose apartment was not damaged in the fire.

Phoenix fire officials say at least six people will be displaced. The Red Cross is offering assistance.
