Toddler killed when dad backs out of drivewayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A 2-year-old girl died after her father backed over her with a pickup truck as he was leaving their Phoenix home Tuesday morning.
The toddler was playing with her 7-year-old brother in the front yard of their home near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road at approximately 10:30 a.m. Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the siblings were supervised by their father.
The children's mother returned home after running some errands and went into the house, according to Crump. Believing the mother was watching the kids, the father backed his pickup truck out of the driveway to go run his errands and hit his daughter.
"Neither he nor the mother actually had possession of and knew exactly where this little girl was at and ultimately she had walked behind the truck and as he was backing out he backed over her," Crump said.
The girl was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital where she died from her injuries.
Officers said it appears to be a tragic accident and they do not expect criminal charges to be filed.
