Memorial Day services around Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. -- On this Memorial Day, a celebration at the Purple Heart Park. The event was designed to honor those who received the purple heart in combat defending our freedom.

It was one of several memorials around Tucson Monday.

Another service included a gathering at Evergreen Cemetery on the north side.

Visitors came by to pay their respects to friends and family who served their country.

It was a time to give thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

"It's not just a holiday to party, we have to remember them because they did go and fight for us so, we have to remember them at all times," said Daughter of World War I Veteran Anita Carrillo.

To honor their services, cemetery workers placed an American flag on each grave site.


TUCSON, Ariz. -- American flags filled the lawn outside of a place many war veterans now call home.

The Country Club of La Cholla placed the red, white and blue, all over the front lawn during a patriotic celebration.

One war veteran who lives at the retirement home says the tribute is a reminder of how lucky we are to live in America.

"I've seen other parts of the world, I've lived in other parts of the world and believe me there is no country on this earth like our United States,"

The celebration also included a musical performance featuring patriotic songs.
