MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police officers arrested a man as he tried to steal copper wire from freeway light poles early Tuesday morning.

After receiving a tip, police officers saw Christopher Felter pulling copper wire and preparing it for removal near Power Road and U.S. 60 in Mesa at approximately 3:30 a.m.

Felter attempted to flee on foot but was captured by a Mesa police K-9, according to Sgt. Ed Wessing. Felter received minor bites from the police dog and was taken into custody.

There was approximately $3,000 worth of damage to four light poles in the area.

Wessing said Felter has a history of copper wire theft and had been recently released on bond for similar offenses.
