The real reason for Memorial DayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – While Memorial Day is generally synonymous with the first cookouts and pool parties of the summer, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts teamed up with several military-focused youth groups Saturday morning to remember the real reason for this holiday.
They decorated the graves at the VA’s National Memorial Cemetery on Cave Creek Road in Phoenix, turning the grounds in to a sea of fluttering American flags and honoring those who have given their lives in service of our country.
“This is one of events we look forward to yearly,” Jon Partridge of the Firebird Young Marines. “It’s a certain atmosphere that makes you proud to be an American.”
The cemetery, which has more than 48,000 graves for veterans and those service members who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, will host a special Memorial Day ceremony – one of the best in the nation – on Monday.
