Arrest in hit and run of Tucson cyclistPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- TPD says they arrested a woman for running over bicylist Samuel Abate Friday night and then fleeing the scene.
"As with any traumatic brain injury, its a step forward, maybe two steps back and we're two steps back today," said Williams Abate.
William Abate's son Samuel has a long road to recovery in front of him after being hit by a vehicle that was reportedly weaving in and out on traffic on Swan near Camp Lowell while he was riding his bike Friday night.
The driver who hit him fled the scene.
"We want justice. We have to be patient about that," said William Abate.
Police have arrested 21-year-old Abigail Allin.
They say she hit samuel friday night while on a suspended licence And then drove away from the scene leaving him in the middle of the road seriously injured.
"We received a tip yesterday and detectives followed up on that and were able to locate evidence on the vehicle as well as track down the owner," said Sgt. Diana Lopez from the Tucson Police Department. "We were able to charge her with 3 felony counts."
"To hit a human being with such force and to cause so much trauma and to drive away is beyond my ability to comprehend," said William Abate.
Allin was booked into the Pima County jail Wednesday morning.
News coverage of the case led to the arrest. Sam's dad says the owner of a mobile windshield replacement company called police when Allin tried to fix her car.
Samuel's hospital bills are starting to add up for the family. If you would like to help them out with the costs, a Wells Fargo account has been set up for funds. It's called the Samuel Abate donation.
