TUCSON, Ariz. -- An accident at approximately 1:30 Thursday morning reportedly left a woman in serious condition trapped in her compact car under a semi trailer for about an hour.

Westbound traffic on I-10 between Orange Grove Road and Ina Road was closed for about 45 minutes as crews from Northwest Fire District worked to extract the driver of a Nissan Versa that was "stuck" under the rear portion of semi-truck trailer carrying tomatoes.

The 24-year-old was eventually extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to the trauma center at University Medical Center.

The damage to the vehicle was so extensive incident commanders for Northwest Fire had to call in a team with specialized equipment to remove the injured woman.

The accident is still under investigation.
