1 Killed, 2 hurt in head-on wreck in GlendalePosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. – One person was killed and two more were injured in an early morning head-on crash in Glendale.
It happened at about 5:30 a.m. at 83rd and Missouri avenues, which is about half a mile south of Bethany Home Road.
According to Glendale police, a silver four-door car was heading south on 83rd Avenue when the driver veered into the northbound lanes and plowed head-on into a pickup truck and trailer belonging to a landscaping company.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Aerial and ground video showed that car draped in a black tarp.
The two people who were in the pickup were taken to a local hospital. Their injuries reportedly were not life-threatening.
It’s not clear why the driver of the car suddenly crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, but there were no skid marks on the roadway. Police say the absence of skid marks generally indicates that the driver did not take any kind of evasive action, which could mean that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Detectives have not yet determined if that's what happened.
The Glendale Police Department has not released information about any of the victims.
The fatal wreck is under investigation so it will be several hours before the vehicles and debris are cleared.
Police said 83rd Avenue would be closed in the area until about 11 a.m. Drivers were being advised to use 91st or 75th avenues to get around the wreck scene.
