Man allegedly sexually assaults girl before cross-city chasePosted: Updated:
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Police say a teenage girl was allegedly snatched then sexually assaulted.
It took a 12-hour manhunt, but police say they have the suspect behind bars.
3TV tried knocking on the door at the Tempe home where police say, 24-year-old Christopher Shahin lives.
He was arrested and is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Our questions were cut short by an older man behind a screen door who acted in a threatening manner towards us.
Police say Shahin grabbed the 14-year-old at a gas station near Sarival Avenue and Yuma Road in Goodyear at about 4:30 p.m. as she was walking home from school.
Shahin allegedly threw the girl in his car, a white four-door Lexus and drove about a mile down the road where, detectives say, he sexually assaulted her.
Two individuals happened to see the car and a struggle in the back seat. They ran up to help and supposedly scared Shahin.
He drove off with the girl in the sedan. The two good Samaritans managed to write down the car's license plate before he got away. Investigators say he drove a bit down the street before tossing the girl out of his car.
Police were able to stake out Shahin's home in Tempe due to the license plate information and police surrounded him at about 9 p.m. when he pulled into his driveway near McClintock and Elliot.
Shahin allegedly drove off, running over a police officer before fleeing.
Police were able to track Shahin down to an apartment complex in Mesa near 8th Street and Elm. It’s unclear what he was doing there but police were able to take him into custody just before 4 a.m.
The search for this accused sexual predator covered most of the Valley starting in Goodyear going to Tempe and ending in Mesa.
The police officer struck by Shahin’s car received only minor injuries.
Five different police agencies participated in the manhunt including Goodyear, DPS as well as Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa police officers.
