One person killed in fiery head-on collisionPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - One person is dead after a semi-truck and passenger car collided head-on Wednesday evening on Carefree Highway.
Both vehicles caught fire after the collision just before 6 p.m. at Carefree Highway and Lake Pleasant Road.
The driver of the car, Harold Rothstein, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck, Michael Rivera, 50, was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. He has been treated and released from the hospital.
The Department of Public Safety said it appears as if the BMW sedan crossed over the center lane and ran into the semi-truck head-on, causing both vehicles to catch fire.
Carefree Highway was closed in the area well into the evening while DPS conducted its investigation. The roadway has since reopened.
