AVONDALE, Ariz. – A bicyclist was killed by a driver who attempted to flee the scene in Avondale on Monday just before 1 a.m.
Avondale police responded to the scene of the accident after receiving reports of a westbound Green Ford vehicle striking a bicyclist near 107th Avenue and Van Buren.
A witness reportedly followed the driver, identified as Kenneth Sutton, 37, and led officers to the alleged suspect who was in the area of El Mirage Road and Van Buren still traveling westbound.
Two Avondale patrol cars attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the driver when a short chase ensued as Sutton allegedly drove onto the eastbound lanes and then onto the sidewalk.
Officers were able to position their police cars so that they could use their bumpers to block the suspect car from continuing to travel westbound.
The suspect initially refused to exit the car and then resisted arrested but ultimately complied with police and was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital due to the collision that caused the air bag to deploy. The suspect was also bitten by a K9 officer while resisting arrest.
Sutton is currently being held at the 4th Avenue Jail where he faces one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and one count of aggravated assault on a police officer. Other charges could be filed.
The bicyclist killed in the crash has been identified as 24-year-old Christopher Dutton of Avondale.
This case remains under investigation.
