17-Year-old dies in early morning shooting; another teen arrestedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A 17 year-old Phoenix boy died after being shot in the head and a 15-year-old boy is in custody.
Police say at about 12:30 a.m., the teen's parents woke up to the sound of gunshots. They went outside their home in the neighborhood of 64th Drive and Indian School Road, and that's when they saw their son lying on the ground on the west side of the house. The teen had been shot in the head.
Detectives said anywhere from two to four shots were fired.
Investigators were able to make an arrest in the shooting late afternoon Tuesday. A 15-year-old is facing a second-degree murder charge. Police said there were no obvious signs of a struggle and are still trying to determine a motive.
The teen's parents were asleep and did not hear anything inside or outside the house prior to the gunshots.
It's not clear why the teen was outside.
"He has his own entrance to his bedroom so they're not sure who could have come and gone," said Lt. Sean Kennedy with the Phoenix Police Department.
Investigators are interviewing the teenager's friends and acquaintances in hopes of finding out what led up to the shooting
The name of the teen, a student at Trevor Browne High School, will not be released because of his age.
Police aren't able to release the name of the suspect because of his age. The teen suspect is an acquaintance of the victim.
