One man is dead; suspects facing murder, kidnapping chargesPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A woman upset after a sexual encounter led to a fatal shooting early Sunday morning.
At around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Phoenix police were called to the Fountain Springs apartment complex near 16th Street and Thomas Road for a shots-fired call.
The police chopper was on scene first and reported seeing two people running from a single apartment. Shortly after that, the chopper reported seeing two people jump out of a second-story window and run.
All four of the people were found and taken in custody.
Following the investigation, police said when they entered the apartment, they found the body of Paul Katoa, 19.
Police said he was shot several times and died on scene.
According to police, Tiana Turman, 18, got upset after the man she had a sexual encounter with left. She went and got a friend, Shykeem Jones, 24, and the two went back to the apartment with a gun.
There were five people inside, including Katoa. Jones ordered all of them to the ground at gunpoint, but Katoa decided to fight with him. He was then fatally shot.
Two men inside jumped out of a window to escape, while two women hid in a closet until police arrived.
According to court paperwork, Katoa was not the man involved with Turman.
Both Jones and Turman are in police custody facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping.
