1 Killed, 1 wounded in possible gang shootingPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – An 18-year-old man is dead and another person is recovering after a shooting that police believe might have been gang-related.
It happened at about 8:30 p.m. Monday at a park in the area of 75th Avenue and Vineyard Road (between Southern Avenue and Baseline Road), which is next to Trailside Point Elementary School. A 911 call reported several shots fired.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found two males who had been wounded.
One of them, Brandon Gongora, died at the hospital. The other victim, whose injuries reportedly were not life-threatening, has not been identified.
According to police, it started when two groups got into a verbal altercation. One of the groups was asked to leave the park.
Before leaving, one member of the departing group pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting the two victims and a nearby car. The suspect and those with him then fled the scene.
According to Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department, investigators do not believe the victims were the intended target.
Parents who have kids at Trailside Point Elementary School say gunfire in the area is not uncommon.
Witnesses told police the shooting was gang-related.
“I guess there were some guys over there throwing up signs or something like that,” said Daniel Brown as he walked his children to school. “The guys just came back around and started shooting. The kid who got killed had nothing to do with it. He actually told his cousin to run, and he ended up getting killed.”
Homicide detectives and the gang squad were on the scene all night.
The suspect is described as a black male between 16 and 18 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing between 135 and 140 pounds. He has short hair and was wearing a red hoodie. Police said he was with a group of three to five other black males.
Police are not releasing any other information.
