PHOENIX (AP) -- A Mesa Fire Department captain and paramedic has been appointed by the Phoenix City Council to fill the vacated seat in District 2.

The council voted 7-1 Thursday to select Bryan Jeffries over three other candidates vying for the interim term.

Jeffries is replacing Peggy Neely, who recently resigned to run for Phoenix mayor.

Jeffries has been with Mesa Fire since 1995 and holds a master's degree in legal and ethical studies from the University of Baltimore.

He'll serve until Aug. 30 when the city holds a special election to decide who will serve the remaining term that expires on Jan 2., 2014.

Jeffries says he intends to run in that election along with at least six other candidates.

District 2 runs through the northern and eastern part of Phoenix.
