Dr. Oz -- The Dukan Diet and 10 things you need to do to stay healthyPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Dr. Oz is gearing up for some incredible shows, tackling everything from the Dukan Diet – which Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, used before her wedding – to how MTV’s “Teen Moms” has changed our perception of young mothers to the top 10 things you need to do every day to stay healthy.
The French physician who invented the Dukan Diet, Dr. Pierre Dukan, is a guest on Monday’s show.
“I’ve got a bunch of U.S. physicians who are going to debate him about the diet. Is it good or bad?” Oz told Kaley O’Kelley on “Good Morning! Arizona.” “I’ve spent a lot of time with him [Dukan], and he’s a very insightful man. He has designed a program based on the tens of thousands of patients that he has managed in his own life over his 35-year career.”
Oz said the Dukan Diet is like an Atkins Diet only you cut out fats in addition to carbs, but it’s only for a very short period of time.
“Here’s the good part. He argues that if you can make a diet easy to do, people will stay on it,” Oz said. “By the time you’re done with his program, you can eat whatever you want – literally whatever you desire – except one day a week. One day a week, he wants you back on the strict diet. If you do that, he says you will not gain weight.”
Oz said he was shocked when he first read about the Dukan Diet.
“I didn’t think much of it,” he explained. “Then I began to do my homework and I had the chance to do a sit-down interview with him, and I realized what his thought was. … By the time you’ve done the first part of the diet, you’ve learned how to eat well and you’re on a program that’s not that difficult.”
From there, the one strict day a week is a reminder.
“They might gain a little bit in the six days, but they lose it in the one day, and they stay even,” Oz said.
Oz also touched briefly on the top 10 things you need to do to keep yourself healthy. First is take a multivitamin, but don’t swallow the pill all at once. Take half in the morning and half in the afternoon. This keeps the levels steady in your body.
“You pee out your multivitamins,” he explained. “Like antibiotics, you have to take them periodically in order to make sure you have a good level.”
He wrapped with a brief discussion of poop -- one of his favorite topics -- the color it should never be and why it's important.
“One of the top 10 things to check is your poop,” Oz said.
Oz offered three options – black, red, and white. Certain foods (i.e. beets or dyes) and vitamins (i.e. iron) can affect the color of you poop, so black and red are not always cause for concern. White poop, however, means no bile is getting from the liver or gallbladder into the intestines. That can be indicative of a tumor or other problem.
Oz emphasized that you need to know how your body works in order to keep it healthy.
