MESA, Ariz. -- A fire that displaced as many as a dozen people might have been intentionally started, according to the Mesa Fire Department.

The fire started in an unoccupied apartment near McKellips Road and Country Club Drive at approximately 10 a.m. Monday.

More than 30 firefighters and command personnel from Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe and Scottsdale responded to the scene.

Crews had the fire stopped in less than 15 minutes.

The fire gutted one apartment and damaged two others, according to Forrest Smith with the Mesa Fire Department. Two or three other apartments may have some water damage.

No injuries were reported, but 10 to 12 residents have been displaced.

According to Detective Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department, the tenant was recently evicted and was observed leaving the scene shortly before the fire started.

Berry said the cause of the fire is suspicious and still under investigation.
