The Tucson BBB office provided almost 500,000 instances of service to local consumers last year, according to States. She says BBB accepts inquiries about all types of business, including off-line, on-line, BBB accredited or not. She says BBB also accepts inquiries about charities. She says there are over 2300 local businesses in the Tucson area that are BBB accredited. She says 70-percent of inquiries are for information, and are not complaints.
States says BBB’s mission is to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust, which is accomplished by creating a community of trustworthy businesses, setting standards for marketplace trust, encouraging and supporting best practices, celebrating marketplace role models, and by denouncing substandard marketplace behavior. She says BBB of Southern Arizona handles 24 telephone lines, internet inquiries, incoming and outbound emails and over 2,000 calls a week. She says every BBB accredited business is monitored for continuing adherence to BBB standards.
States says “scams” are also something the BBB deals with, by issuing alerts about them. She says the BBB often is the first organization to know about a developing scam because when a scam develops in one part of the country, the news travels quickly between BBBs in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico that in turn alert the public in their communities.
