18-Year-old claims self-defense in fatal stabbing; 2 others injuredPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE, Ariz. – A Glendale 18-year-old could be facing charges after allegedly stabbing three people, one of whom died, over the weekend.
According to police, Frankie Morris said he acted in self-defense. Officers were called to a neighborhood near Chapparal Park in the area of 55th and Grovers avenues shortly before midnight on Saturday.
According to Sgt. Brent Coombs of the Glendale Police Department, Stevie Runquist and Casey Charleston, both 18, and a 17-year-old had been stabbed during a fight. The injuries to Charleston and the 17-year-old were not life-threatening. Both were treated and released from a local hospital. Runquist, however, was killed.
Investigators were able to determine that Morris was the suspect in the case. He fled the scene before officers arrived.
Detectives located Morris late Sunday afternoon. Coombs said Morris told the detectives who interviewed him that he had been attacked and that his actions were self-defense. It's not clear what happened leading up to the alleged attack.
Based on Morris' assertion of self-defense and what investigators learned on the scene and from other interviews, police released Morris from custody.
Charges will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review.
