Neely joins race for mayor of PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Phoenix City Councilwoman Peggy Neely has resigned her seat to run for mayor.
Neely issued a statement Thursday saying she thought long and hard before deciding to make a run for the seat being vacated by Mayor Phil Gordon. She created an exploratory committee last year but was required to step down under Arizona's 'resign-to-run" law before formally entering the race.
Neely listed job creation, making the city more business friendly and controlling the city budget as important policy goals.
Six others have registered as candidates. They include political consultant Wes Gullett, current Councilman Claude Mattox and former Councilman Greg Stanton. Mattox doesn't have to resign because he is in the last year of his term.
The election is set for Aug. 30, with a Nov. 8 runoff if necessary.
