MESA, Ariz. – Police are searching for the man who robbed a Family Dollar Store in Mesa.

It happened Wednesday near Dobson and Broadway roads.

Witnesses told police a black man in his 20s walked into the store and asked for change for $1. When an employee opened the drawer of the cash register to get the change, the man reached over the counter, grabbed money from the drawer and then ran out.

Once outside, the suspect jumped into a red or maroon Dodge Stratus that was driven by a Hispanic male.

Michael Melendez of the Mesa Police Department said the suspect never showed a weapon and never made any threats. He simply grabbed money from the open register and left the store.

According to police, the suspect is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and black pants.

It’s not clear exactly how much money the suspect took.

The employee was not injured.
