Police shoot alleged armed robber in confrontation at Mesa hotelPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. – An alleged armed robber is in the hospital after a confrontation with police ended with an officer-involved shooting at a Mesa motel Wednesday night.
It happened at about 8:30 p.m. At first this was thought to be a domestic violence situation that had escalated, but it actually began when officers tried to serve a warrant on the suspect at the Broadview Motel at Main Street and Sossaman Road.
While few details were immediately available, the suspect has been identified as Cody Schaible. The 19-year-old has a history of run-ins with the law. He also reportedly has ties to a white supremacist group.
Police said Schaible skipped out on a $25,000 bond. Mesa’s gang task force had information that he was staying at the Broadview.
According to Sgt. Ed Wessing of the Mesa Police Department, Schaible was acting erratically and yelling that he did not want to go back to jail.
When Schaible refused to surrender peacefully and reportedly made a threatening move toward the police, at least one officer fired, wounding him.
Schaible was taken to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately available but Wessing said very early Thursday morning that he was expected to survive.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
Wessing said detectives expected to release more details some time Thursday morning.
