MESA, Ariz. – A man faces attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges after allegedly stabbing his stepfather more than 50 times with a pocketknife.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies responded to the 10000 block of East Butte Street at about 10 p.m. Monday in reference to an emergency call reporting a stabbing.

Deputies arrived on scene and found the front door open and could reportedly hear screaming coming from inside the home.

When deputies entered the residence, they say Blake Alexander Merrell, 26, was on top of the victim on the kitchen floor. Deputies could see the suspect stabbing his stepfather.

The suspect’s brother was reportedly striking Merrell with a stick, demanding he get off of his father.

Deputies ordered both men to stop at gunpoint. Merrell dropped the weapon, later revealed to be a Swiss army knife, and laid down on his back.

Merrell was taken into custody. Police say that as he was being walked to a patrol car he said, “My brother told me I stabbed him. If I did that, I hope I killed him.”

The victim was taken by medical helicopter to a Scottsdale hospital where he is listed in critical condition after suffering more than 50 stab wounds to his head, neck and arms.

Merrell allegedly admitted to police that he had stabbed his stepfather because he was a “mean person against his family.”

Police said Merrell is mentally disturbed. He is currently being held in the psychiatric ward at a Maricopa County jail.
