Giffords for Senate speculation

TUCSON, Ariz. -- As Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recovers in a Houston hospital, already there's a lot of buzz over whether she will run for the U.S. Senate next year.

About a dozen potential candidates are waiting to see if Giffords will run for the seat vacated by retiring Senator Jon Kyl.

So far, the only Republican Congressman Jeff Flake has declared his candidacy but he might face a challenge from former governor Fife Symington.

Democrats on the "possible" list include Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Congressman Ed Pastor and Arizona Board of Regents member Fred Duval.

"Clearly there's a lot of people around the state and around the country who are excited about this open U.S. Senate seat and see there is a big opportunity to have somebody like Congresswoman Giffords, who over the years has really embodied a kind of government that works across party lines,"

Giffords campaign office says the congresswoman has no plans at this time to run for office in 2012 or beyond.
