'Soul Surfer' - Dennis Quaid and Bethany HamiltonPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- In 2003, a 13-year-old girl lost her arm to a shark attack while she was surfing in Hawaii.
Bethany Hamilton's incredible recovery -- she became a pro surfer -- turned into motivational appearances, a book , and now a movie starring AnnaSophia Robb and Dennis Quaid.
Brad Cesmat previewed the movie and had the chance to sit down with Quaid, who played Hamilton's dad, and the 'Soul Surfer' herself.
Quaid's advice is that you bring some tissues when you see the movie.
"You cry in a good way," he said.
The actor said he feels an added responsibility to "get it right" when playing a real person.
"We were lucky because the entire Hamilton family was on the set," he said. "They were right there."
Hamilton said Quaid got into surfing during the shoot.
Cesmat said the scene in which the shark attacked Hamilton is right off the top of the movie. He said it happens quickly.
"I'm really happy with how the shark attack scene was portrayed," Hamilton said. "It's very authentic and really how it happened that morning. It wasn't super over-exaggerated, which I didn't want. It's a rare thing to happen and I did not want to cause a shark phobia."
"She's taken her tragedy and really impacted people on a number of levels," Cesmat said.
