Brewer proposes 'fat tax' endeavors to restore transplant funding

Pending approval by the legislature and the federal government, Arizona's medicaid system soon may start charging extra for recipients who lead unhealthy lifestyles.

Governor brewer friday proposed charging a $50 annual fee for patients who smoke, have diabetes, or are overweight.

AHCCCS officials hope the fee will cut health care costs by pushing patients to keep themselves healthy.

Brewer claims part of that money will help restore funding for organ transplants in Arizona.

But during the debate over that program, dozens of patients waited and several died.
