PD: Volunteer planned to rob church

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A Scottsdale man is accused of trying to steal money from the church where he was a volunteer.

Police arrested David Johnson, 60, after they watched him enter St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church near Granite Reef Road McDonald Drive at approximately 3 a.m. Monday.

Police had received a report that someone entered the church at least one other time on a Sunday night or Monday morning and that the intruder may have taken cash from the church office.

Johnson told police he had volunteered at the church for several years and had a key.

According to Scottsdale police Officer David Pubins, Johnson made statements that indicated he had planned to take money from the church office.

Johnson was booked on a burglary charge.
