Rider dies after 2 motorcycles collide in MesaPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- A man died after two motorcycles collided in Mesa Saturday afternoon.
Mark Hill, 50, and James Benney, 44, were riding their motorcycles eastbound on Guadalupe Road from Ellsworth Road at approximately 3:45 p.m.
Mesa police Sgt. Ed Wessing said both riders were traveling at a high rate of speed.
The riders reportedly passed a slower passenger car and attempted to rejoin side-by-side riding. The motorcycles then sideswiped each other, causing Hill to hit the curb and crash.
Benney continued through the intersection of Crismon and Guadalupe roads before losing control and laying the bike down.
Hill was transported to a Scottsdale hospital where he later died. Wessing said Hill might have been impaired at the time of the crash.
Benney, who was not injured, was later arrested for DUI.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
