GLENDALE, Ariz. – The students of Sierra Verde STEM Academy in Glendale cut the ribbon on their brand-new WeatherBug station Wednesday morning.

The entire school turned out to greet 3TV meteorologist April Warnecke.

Sierra Verde STEM Academy was one of several schools to enter a video in 3TV’s Junior Forecaster contest. The fifth- and sixth-graders worked together to come up with a fun and very creative video.

With the help of teachers Jill Hoppe and Micah Yorke, Makayla Cortez, Tess Fergus, McKenzie Houston, Haley Hudson, Austin Jackson, Michael Kail, Namitha Palnati, Jonathan Price, and Emma Saal wrote and produced the winning entry, which incorporated video of the huge hail storm that pounded Phoenix Metro area in early October.

Not only will the Sierra Verde STEM Academy host a weather station that will collect real-time weather data and observations, the students also won a Skype camera that they’ll use to deliver the weather one morning live on “Good Morning! Arizona.”

“It’s really exciting,” said one seventh grader. We’re the first school to get one so it’s kind of an honor, too.”

The students are already putting their new WeatherBug station to use, keeping an eye on the temperature and wind speed as the data streams in to their computers.
