PHOENIX (AP) -- Operators of the nation's largest nuclear power plant near Phoenix have met with Arizona utility regulators to assess safety procedures in the wake of Japan's nuclear accident.

Tuesday's hearing before the Arizona Corporation Commission is focusing on the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Wintersburg, located about 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix.

The triple-reactor plant supplies electricity to about 4 million customers in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California.

Japan's nuclear crisis has prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to launch a review of U.S. nuclear plants. NRC officials didn't attend Tuesday's special open hearing.

Arizona Public Service officials detailed Palo Verde's safety record and how the Japan disaster is unlikely to occur in Arizona.

APS took the five corporation commissioners on a tour of the Palo Verde plant Monday.
