Suspects in armed robbery at restaurant on the loose in SurprisePosted: Updated:
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Police in Surprise are looking for two armed suspects who robbed the Desert Palms Restaurant just before it opened for breakfast Monday morning.
It happened just as two employees were arriving at the restaurant, which is located near 124th Avenue and Bell Road, to open for the morning.
According to police, one of the suspects was armed with a crowbar while the other had a handgun.
"The gunman of the two put the gun to his [the employee's] head and walked him to the door where the other [suspect] was standing with a crowbar," said Sgt. Mark Ortega of the Surprise Police Department. "They used him to gain entrance."
Once inside the restaurant, the suspects, both of whom were wearing bandannas over their faces, bound the employees -- a man and a woman -- with duct tape.
The suspects got away with some cash that was in the register, as well as cash and personal items from the employees.
Neither employee was physically injured.
Officers taped off the area around the restaurant and searched the area with the help of police dogs. The dogs led officers to the east of the restaurant before losing the scent.
Initial scanner reports indicated that the suspects fled the scene in a van, but police have not confirmed that.
The suspects are described as male, one 5 feet 9 inches and 200 pounds and the other 6 feet and 175 pounds.
Both had their faces covered and were wearing dark hooded sweatshirts.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the Surprise Police Department at 623-222-4000.
