Messenger arrival at Mercury brings celebrations from UA astronomers

TUCSON, Ariz. -- It was a big day for astronomers at the University of Arizona Thursday night, celebrating the arrival of the "Messenger" spacecraft in orbit around the planet Mercury.

Launched in 2004 the $446 million "Messenger" traveled nearly five-billion miles.

It will snap photos of the planet, analyze its magnetic field and hopefully determine whether ice exists in craters that are never exposed to the sun.
