Woman, friends allegedly run down, kill boyfriendPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. – Police are investigating the death of a man who was run down in Mesa early Wednesday morning, allegedly by people he knew.
Investigators are still working to sort out the details, but according to the Mesa Police Department, a couple got in an argument as they left a bar in the area of Southern Avenue and Longmore at about 2:30 a.m.
The man reportedly began throwing rocks at the woman. The man, who was believed to be the woman’s boyfriend, then walked away.
Detective Steve Berry of the Mesa Police Department said the woman jumped into a white van with some friends and chased the boyfriend, allegedly running him down. The van then slammed into a power pole.
The people inside the van jumped into a second vehicle, this one driven by another woman, and fled the scene. Police caught up with them a short time later.
The boyfriend was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators do not yet know what prompted the couple’s argument.
Berry said the driver of the van, a man, and the women behind the wheel of the second car are being investigated on suspicion of DUI.
“It looks like everybody involved here was probably intoxicated,” he said.
In addition, the van driver could face homicide charges.
“It sounds like this was an intentional act,” Berry said.
Police have not released the names of anyone involved in the incident.
Southern Avenue between Alma School Road and Longmore was closed so detectives could conduct their investigation. Drivers were being advised to use Broadway Road as an alternate.
