PEORIA, Ariz. - Detectives with the Peoria Police Department, along with help from the Phoenix police Fugitive Apprehension Team,  were able to track down a suspect who stabbed a man while stealing beer from a Circle K.

Police identified the suspect as Matthew Papanek, 29, of Glendale, from surveillance video.

Papanek was taken into custody Wednesday evening at a home in the area of 77th Avenue and McDowell Road.

According to Peoria police, he initially tried to hide in a closet but then was taken into custody without incident.

Papanek is accused of stabbing a 21-year-old male who was attempting to foil Papanek's beer theft Sunday at the Circle K on the corner of 87th Avenue and Bell Road.

A struggle ensued and Papanek stabbed the victim with a small pocketknife. He then walked backward out of the store, raising the beer in one hand and the knife in another on his way out.

The victim was treated on the scene by the fire department and then transported to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Papanek was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault and burglary.
