Pei Wei restaurants remain closed following sheriff's raid

PHOENIX - Seven Pei Wei restaurants remain closed in the Valley after last week’s raid by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department.

The company is working to hire and train new replacement workers. Stores in Avondale, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Surprise and Tempe have temporarily shut its doors.

Four restaurant locations, along with the company's corporate offices, were raided in an identity theft investigation resulting in more than two dozen arrests.

A call into the closed restaurants resulted in an answering machine message saying, "We are working hard to re-open the doors. We hope to re-open very soon. Thank you for your patience."

The stores that have been temporarily closed also have a sign at the door, which left some customers confused. While many say they will go back to eat, Misty Coffman says she's not sure.

"There's a lot of high school kids in this area, middle-aged... people who are out of work and it's just unfortunate," she said. "I don't begrudge anyone the right to work, but do it the right way."

Pei Wei says it is not doing anything different as it works to hire new replacements. All employees will still go through E-Verify, a system that was not required before 2008.
